He loves butter. The gopis love him. And he’s blue-skinned. These are some of the most well-known facts about Lord Krishna. Here, now, keeping in mind that Janmashtami (Lord Krishna’s birthday) is just around the corner (September 5, 2015) are some little-known facts about one of India’s most-loved deities.

ONE- The ultimate ladies’ man

Krishna had more than 16,108 wifes, of which only eight (yes, only eight) were his princely wives, known as Ashtabharya or patrani. These special eight were Rukmini, Satyabhama, Jambavati, Nagnajiti, Kalindi, Mitravinda, Bhadra, and Lakshma.

TWO- For the love of Murali

Where Krishna went, his flute went. And the doe-eyed gopis dutifully followed.

The gopis once asked Murali, Krishna’s flute: “O Murali, tell us the truth. What merits does our Lord see in you that he holds you so lovingly and tenderly day and night that you might drink deep the nectar of his lovely lips and installs you as the most beloved queen among us all? Where lies the charm, the beauty, the grace and attractiveness in you? Will you not reveal that secret to us, the constant beggars of Krishna’s love?”

THREE- The Riddle of Radha

If Rukmini was one of Krihsna’s special queens, who was Radha to him? Did Krishna marry Radha? How did Rukmini feel about Radha? Did Rukmini meet Radha? Quite frankly, none of it matters. All that matters is Radha loved Krishna. Everything else is us being judgemental. You don’t question, label and judge a love like Radha’s. It is an unconditional love. A spiritual love. A love that was blessed by Lord Brahma. It was a love above all love. It was a match made in heaven literally (by Lord Brahma), the love between Radha and Krishna.

FOUR- Little Krishna

Lord Krishna was a child at heart. Always. He was impish (always) and well-known for teasing the milkmaids of Vrindavan and reducing his foster mother Yashoda to tears with his naughty antics. He and his friends would steal milk and butter, hide the clothes of bathing girls, let the cows go free at milking time, and even break the water pots that the milkmaids carried on their heads. No wonder he is universally acknowledged as the deity of humour and messenger of peace.

FIVE- Un-fair and much-loved

Krishna is from the Sanskrit word Ka. Krsna is an adjective that means ‘black’ or ‘dark.’ Did somebody say fair and handsome?

SIX- Krishna the Prophet

Bahá’ís believe that Krishna was a ‘Manifestation of God,’ or one in a line of prophets who have revealed the Word of God progressively for a gradually maturing humanity. In this way, Krishna shares an exalted station with Abraham, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Muhammad, Jesus, the Báb, and the founder of the Bahá’í Faith, Bahá’u’lláh.

SEVEN- Krishna in the Quran

Members of the Ahmadiyya Community believe Krishna to be a great prophet of God as described by their founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. This belief is maintained by the Qur’anic Principle that God has sent prophets and messengers to every nation of the world leaving no region without divine guidance (Quran 10:47 and Quran 16:36). Some say, the Prophet Muhammad which mentions a prophet of God in India who was dark in colour and his name was ‘Kahana.’

As you can see, there are many forms of Lord Krishna; just as there are many forms of God. We must remind yourself of this universal truth this Janmashtami (September 5). Here’s our shrine devoted to Lord Krishna.
